Care homes and nursing homes in Essex: comparing Abbey Total Care's three Essex homes

Three Abbey Total Care homes have Essex addresses. This guide sets out how they differ, how to reach them and, because an Essex address does not always mean an Essex council, who to contact about funding.

Three homes with Essex addresses

Abbey Total Care has three homes with Essex postal addresses: Forest Place in Buckhurst Hill, Ashbrook Nursing Home in Collier Row, Romford, and Moreland House in Hornchurch. All three provide nursing care, dementia care, respite and palliative care, so the choice usually comes down to setting, size and who needs to visit.

How the three homes differ

Forest Place is the largest home in the group, with a chef on site and two care units, which gives some choice about where a person lives. Being larger, it has more rooms and more staff on site, though it can feel busy to someone who has lived alone for years.

Ashbrook sits between the two in size. It has a café-style bakery and bistro, an indoor garden room and a sensory room, and its road links suit families who drive in from further out in Essex.

Moreland House is the smallest of the three, purpose-built in 2014. It has hydrotherapy baths, a salon and a garden with a fountain and gazebo, and it suits visitors who come by train.

An Essex address does not always mean Essex County Council

Council funding runs through the council for the area where the person lives, and the postal county can mislead. Romford and Hornchurch have Essex postal addresses but are in the London Borough of Havering. Buckhurst Hill is in the area of Essex County Council, while families in nearby Woodford Green and Wanstead deal with the London Borough of Redbridge.

If you are unsure, the GOV.UK council finder gives the answer from a postcode. For what the council assesses and what the NHS may pay, read who pays for a care home in 2026/27.

Towns around Forest Place

Forest Place has written a guide for each group of towns around Buckhurst Hill, covering road distance, the Central line and which council to call: Loughton and Debden, Epping and Theydon Bois, Chigwell and Hainault, Woodford and South Woodford, Chingford, Waltham Abbey and Ongar.
